Supported Printers
Most HP parallel-based peripherals and non-HP parallel-based printers are supported. However, there are some types of printers that are not supported:
Host-based (sometimes referred to as GDI printers). A printer that relies on the computer's processor to rasterize the print job. Most host-based printers use the GDI interface built into Windows (hence the "GDI printer" term), so there is no need to convert the data to PostScript, PCL, or other printer language.
PPA (Printing Performance Architecture). Like host-based printing, this architecture relies on the computer's processor. The software driver handles all formatting, such as color matching and correction, half-toning, edge enhancement, tone correction, and ink management.

Port configuration
Port configuration indicates whether the HP Jetdirect print server is configured for network communications using a 10/100Base-TX full- or half-duplex channel. The HP Jetdirect 500X print server uses a bi-directional parallel port (IEEE 1284) (or parallel-to-serial adapter for serial ports).
Performance information
The HP Jetdirect 500X external print server sends data to printers at speeds of up to 360 Kbps, which is as fast or faster than many internal print servers.
Software information
HP software is provided on the CD-ROM that comes with the print server. Also, many printers have networking software on their CD-ROM, integrated into the driver installation.
Using HP software, administrators can configure and manage print servers and network printers, provide better overall printer performance, and share printers in mixed-LAN environments.
